The Dangers of Exposed Class IV Lasers

Laser Safety Compliance performs site audits for the laser systems installed on your production lines.  Our goal is to ensure your lasers are operating under safe conditions based on ANSI Z136.1, Safe Use of Laser Standards, and OSHA Regulations.  Without proper beam shielding and without proper Personal Protective Equipment, Class IV lasers can cause irreparable damage to the eye (cornea) and third degree burns to the skin.

In evaluating the laser installations, Laser Safety Compliance conducts the following actions:

  • Performs Risk Assessment Hazard Analysis using the parameters from this Laser installed
  • Determines Maximum Permissible Exposure Limits for Lasers installed
  • Calculates Nominal Ocular Hazard Zones as well as Nominal Hazard Zones for lasers installed
  • Calculates hazards zones for Specular and Diffuse reflections
  • Reviewed Standard Operating Procedures in house LSO's have in place
  • Reviews the PPE operators use around the lasers as well as any barriers used
  • Makes final determination in regards to the steps needed to ensure lasers are safe to operate

In the image seen, Laser Safety Compliance made the necessary recommendations to ensure this Class IV system could be operated safely.  The beam shield/integration did not meet Class I standards according to Code of Federal Regulations 1040.1.  Laser Safety Compliance provided a beam shield with interlocked door with a very short turn around (days) to ensure this laser was compliant with Class I standards and that it was safe to operate under normal conditions.
